The brief
With high-quality garden design, you usually see the finished result. The work that came before often stays out of sight.
For landscaping company P. Mertens, we wanted a series showing that process: from excavation and preparing the ground to precisely laying large natural stone slabs.
Alongside machinery and materials, the focus was on the craft and the people who turn a plan into a high-quality outdoor space, step by step.
My approach
I documented the work directly on site. The photographs emerged in the midst of excavation, measuring, preparation and positioning heavy natural stone slabs with millimetre precision using the excavator.
The interplay of people, machinery and materials was particularly important to me. Wide views show the scale of the work, while closer perspectives reveal hands, surfaces and the precision of the workmanship.
The series also gives a prominent place to the high-quality natural stone from Monte Graniti. The finished result depends on both material quality and skilled execution.
The photographs show what P. Mertens builds and the work and craftsmanship that go into it.
