The brief
Empathy supports young people from different social and cultural backgrounds on their personal and professional journeys. Alongside financial support, it focuses on conversation, mentoring, new perspectives and a network where young people can learn from and with one another.
For the closing event, I photographed one of the final shared workshops. The brief was to capture what defines Empathy as well as document this special conclusion: different people coming together, exchanging ideas and meeting as equals.
My approach
I stayed close to the young participants and focused on how they interacted. I focused on the moments in between: concentrated expressions, conversations, working together, reactions, laughter and time spent together on the terrace.
Combined with group photographs, portraits and event details, the result records the occasion and makes the diversity within the group visible.
The images show what happened between people as well as who was there. To me, that's the story of this project:
Empathy is hard to stage. But you can observe it when people truly connect.
The resulting imagery gives Empathy material for its communications beyond the day itself, conveying exactly what the project stands for: togetherness, openness and different paths crossing.
